US Representative Bob Goodlatte (VA), Chair of the House Agriculture Committee is currently blocking HR 857, The American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, the legislation to ban horse slaughter in the U.S. This bill already counts 224 co-sponsors in the House, plus a Senate Companion bill (S. 2352) with 7 other co-sponsors.

Although HR 857 has enough votes to pass the House, Congressman Goodlatte is preventing this legislation from moving forward for a vote, in order to appease the foreign-owned horse slaughter industry and other special interests, many of which are campaign contributors to Mr. Goodlatte.

Currently, only three horse slaughter houses operate in the United States, all Belgian and French owned. The latest to open is the Cavel horse slaughter plant, located in DeKalb, Illinois. The Cavel slaughter facility opened in June of 2004, and slaughters up to 100 horses per day.
