Next Subject: Plagiarism

From Danielle of Caprine Designs in response to Equine Web Design's Notice of Infringement: "I don't know who you are, but I have not plaigarized anything. You may want to consult the dictionary as to what plaigarism actually means."

I have consulted a dictionary. Danielle, for the record, plagiarism is spelled p-l-a-g-i-a-r-i-s-m.

\Pla"gia*rism\, n.
1: a piece of writing that has been copied from someone else and is presented as being your own work 2: the act of plagiarizing; taking someone's words or ideas as if they were your own

Thank you and, yes, Danielle of Caprine Designs has plagiarized Equine Web Design's work and presented it as being her own. Need I remind Danielle of her own statement, "the designs I use, colors, graphics, photos, and text on my site are originally written and designed by me"?

Well, Danielle's already been exposed for the style sheet ripoff, so let's delve deeper into the meat of the matter: web site content.

DeJa Vu All Over Again

There are so many instances of plagiarism in Caprine Design's design home page it's hard to know just where to start, but I'll do my best to illustrate it clearly. One by one, we'll examine these points:

  • navigation: the menu items only have a word changed here and there
  • navigation: the order is nearly identical
  • navigation: the a href title="" tags are identical, even when non-applicable
  • content: many sentences have been taken verbatim from Equine Web Design's design home page
  • content: topics are nearly identical, with identical a href title="" tags

By the way, did I mention Danielle is a published author and claims "the designs I use, colors, graphics, photos, and text on my site are originally written and designed by me"? (I think I may have.)

Let's do another side-by-side comparsion of *just* the menu navigation. NOTE: the layout has been modified to fit the frames below. The actual HTML markup i.e. content remains 100% unchanged.

Equine Web Design Caprine Designs

dialog box on mouseover

Here's your first tip-off: hold your cursor over (don't click your mouse - just hover over) Equine Web Design's menu on the left over the link that says "equine site design" A small dialog box should appear near your cursor that says "equine web site design". Next, hold your mouse cursor over the Caprine Design's menu link (to the right) that says "herd site design". What does it say? A dialog box appears under your cursor that says "equine web site design", doesn't it?

Now, can you tell me why on earth a goat web site designer's link, laid out virtually the same, says "equine web site design"?

I'll tell you exactly why. It's because of some HTML markup called an a href title="" tag. Plagiarizer Caprine Designs didn't bother to change it when they cut-and-pasted from Equine Web Design's home page.

Killer Flamingos

dialog box on mouseover

Even more embarrassing to Caprine Designs, next hold your mouse cursor over Equine Web Design's "flamingos that kill" menu link. A dialog box will appear near your cursor that says "flamingos that kill". Next, go over to the Caprine Designs menu on the right and hold your cursor over "design mistakes". What shows up? Again, a small dialog box appears with the identical phrase, "flamingos that kill".

Flamingos That Kill is a popular web page found under Equine Web Design's design section, by the way. There is no "Flamingos That Kill" web page at Caprine Design. The link on Caprine Design's menu was obviously left in by mistake during Danielle's cut-and-paste process.

Forensic HTML

Coincidence? Not even. The trail of evidence, so to speak, was in the HTML code that was stolen from Equine Web Design's web site and used at Caprine Designs. Sometimes, as in this case, HTML code speaks loudly as DNA.

Did I mention Caprine Designs claims "the designs I use, colors, graphics, photos, and text on my site are originally written and designed by me"?

Caprine Designs: 'busted' yet again.
