Cropping and Resizing Images
page 2
Before we go through the steps to make your large image smaller, you must have two things:
- a functional copy of Paint Shop Pro 8 installed
- an image you've already acquired from your scanner or digital camera, in a format Paint Shop Pro recognizes, saved to your hard drive or a disk
For this tutorial, we'll use a large photo of one of my fine feathered friends, Kato, our tiny Red Pyle Old English Game. This photo was taken with a low-quality digital camera, downloaded to my computer, and saved as a high resolution .jpg file. It was saved from the camera at 600 dpi, which significantly increased the overall file (byte) size.

The original pixel size of this photo is 400 pixels wide and 300 pixels high (400x300), and it weighs in at a hefty 39,340 bytes. It's too large to use online (except as an example), would be an obnoxious size to send in an email, and much of the surrounding background should be cropped. The image also appears rather dark in its original form and would benefit from being brightened.
